Zocor Lawsuit
Zocor which is also known as Simvastatin slows the body’s production of cholesterol in order to prevent cholesterol deposits from building up on artery walls and blocking blood flow to the heart and brain.
It is primarily prescribed to people who need to lower the amount of fatty substances like LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in their blood stream. While reducing the presence of those bad cholesterols in the blood, Zocor simultaneously increases the presence of HDL or good cholesterol.
Although it is primarily prescribed for use in adults, it has also been prescribed to children between the ages of ten and seventeen who have familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia which is a condition that prevents a body from removing cholesterol normally.
In addition to patients with high cholesterol, Zocor has also been prescribed to people who suffer from blood flow problems. When used in these people, it reduces their chances of having a heart attack or a stroke.
In spite of its usefulness, Zocor is known to cause a number of potentially harmful side effects.
The worst side effect and the one to have resulted in several Zocor lawsuits is a muscle disease called Rhabdomyolysis. On March 19, 2010, The United States Food and Drug Administration announced a link between Zocor and muscle injuries or myopathy.
When taking relatively higher doses of the drug, some patients suffered from Rhabdomyolysis which is a very severe form of muscle injury. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition that occurs when muscle fibers begin to disintegrate into the blood stream. The presence of these fibers in the blood stream can and frequently does cause kidney damage and in some cases has even caused kidney failure and death.
The Symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis are as follows:
• Urine that appears to be dark, red, or brown in color
• Feeling weak
• Muscles that ache or feel stiff
• Muscles that feel tender
• Muscles that feel weak
• Extreme tiredness or fatigue
• Pain in the joints
• Having a seizure
• Gaining weight
However, in addition to those extreme side effects Simvastatin or Zocor can cause other side effects. If you have suffered from or are suffering from any of these side effects, you should consult with your doctor or possibly see an attorney about a class action lawsuit:
• Difficulty pooping
• Pain in the stomach
• Feelings of nausea
• Headaches
• Painful, tender or weak muscles
• Urine that appears dark in color
• Feeling tired, weak, or fatigued
• Getting a fever or having chills
• The appearance of unexplained blisters, rashes, hives or other skin conditions
• Feeling itchy
• A swollen face or throat
• Swelling in parts of the face like the tongue, lips, or eyes
• Swollen extremities
• Finding it difficult to breathe or swallow
• Painful feelings in joints
• Feeling sensitive to light
