Talcum Powder Lawsuits

About Talcum Powder

Talc is a mineral used in baby powders, cosmetic facial powders, feminine hygiene powders, and many other consumer products.

The American consumer has been using talcum powder for a variety of reasons.  After noticing how female consumers were using Baby Powder for personal hygiene needs, Johnson & Johnson developed a talcum powder-based product known as Shower-to-Shower to satisfy consumer needs. Products were marketed as keeping consumers fresh, clean, and comfortable.

Talcum Powder Cases

A US Jury recently found Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower body powder to contribute to ovarian cancer after doctors reported finding talc particles in the plaintiffs ovarian cancer tissue after she had been using the product for over 30 years.

A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against this company in January 2011 by the husband of a wife who died from ovarian cancer. The complaint revealed that the deceased had been applying Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower products to her genital region for a prolonged time period. Research has proven that talcum powder can easily transfer from the vagina into the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.

Plaintiff claimed that Imerys Talc and Johnson & Johnson joined forces and formed a “Personal Care Products Counsel’s Talc Interested Party Task Force” to defend usage of the powder and stop any applicable regulatory actions. Complaints all revealed that the manufacturing companies knew about, or should have known, about the links between ovarian cancer and talcum powder usage. A Federal Judge has ruled in favor of the Plaintiff and allowed the conspiracy case to proceed.
