Prilosec
Prilosec is a medication used in the treatment of severe heartburn and other gastro and esophageal disorders. It has been used to treat esophageal erosion and acid reflux. It is used to treat peptic ulcers and chronic heartburn, but is not used to treat less severe cases of occasional heartburn.
It is a proton pump inhibitor, which helps with a range of issues relating to the stomach and esophageal tract. It became available for use over the counter (OTC) in 2003 – prior to that, it was only available by prescription.
Prilosec (omeprazole magnesium) has been known to cause a number of side effects and negative health issues, and many victims have filed a Prilosec lawsuit because of this.
Use of Prilosec can lead to:
- Fracturing of wrist, hips or spine
- Weakening of the stomach lining
- Uncontrollable shaking in various parts of the body
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Increased risk of bacterial infection including food poisoning
People who have taken Prilosec have noticed that they experience a high amount of bacterial infections and more cases of food poisoning as well. This can have very serious consequences for people.
One of the reasons that this occurs is that Prilosec lowers the amount of stomach acid, but the potential downside for this is that it allows bad stomach bacteria to flourish in the lowered acidic environment. With normal amounts of stomach acid present, it is more difficult for stomach bacteria to grow or survive.
Older women particularly seem to be at risk for taking Prilosec, as well as those people who have taken it for an extended period of time, such as greater than one year of regular use.
Side effects of Prilosec can include:
• Vomiting
• Headache
• Gas
• Nausea
• Fever
If you or someone you know have experienced side effects from taking Prilosec, you may be entitled to damages. You should contact a Prilosec attorney who is working on a Prilosec class action lawsuit being lodged against the makers of Prilosec. You could be entitled to damages from the effects of Prilosec caused to you or someone you know.
