Prilosec is a form of medication called a “proton pump inhibitor.” It is designed to inhibit heartburn but according to the FDA, it may well increase the likelihood of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine. On May 25th the Agency announced its review of several epidemiological studies that suggest the correlation between the risk of fractures and use of the medication. The FDA’s initial response as usually occurs when dangerous side effect surface is to direct drug companies to put warnings on the medication labels.

That is what has occurred with Prilosec. A proton pump inhibitor is meant to reduce the level of acid in the stomach, thereby alleviating the symptoms of a peptic ulcer, reducing heartburn symptoms and the occurrence of acid reflux. Based on clinical data, use of the drug for more than a year clearly indicated a rise in the occurrence of bone fractures among people over the age of fifty.

More than One Warning

The FDA hasn’t just posted this notification for Prilosec, it has declared an entire class of drugs that function the way Prilosec does to be potentially injurious to people entering their fifties and older. Prilosec can cause increased fragility in the bones as demonstrated by increased occurrences of major injuries among heartburn sufferers who have been prescribed the drug.

In November of 2009 the FDA issued another warning about Prilosec which declared that use of the drug may significantly reduce the effectiveness of Plavix, an anti-blood clotting drug. Millions of Americans in their later years take blood thinners to lessen the danger of cardiovascular clotting or pulmonary thrombosis, both life-threatening occurrences. And a report to the American Heart Association caused further controversy by declaring that patients taking proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec were more likely to die after surgery.

Class Action Suit in Ohio

All of the questions that have been raised about Prilosec are the result of some major health problems encountered by the drug’s users. Lawsuits against the drug’s manufacturer AstraZeneca are in the works. One class action suit over Prilosec has already been filed in Ohio over severe gastrointestinal problems that resemble food poisoning brought on as a result of Prilosec use.
