Nuva Ring
Nuva Ring is a contraceptive that also has various generic names, such as etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol. Nuva Ring comes in the form of a vaginal ring that uses female hormones in an effort to prevent ovulation. This contraceptive also makes it difficult for the sperm to make it to the uterus. The ring is flexible and works for a three week period as a contraceptive. Nuva Ring is known to be incredibly effective in preventing pregnancies with a 99% effectiveness rate. With its high effectiveness rate it is considered to work as well as a normal birth control pill. Nuva Ring’s main purpose and goal is to work as an effective contraceptive therefore, it does not protect individuals from sexually transmitted diseases.
Nuva Ring is known to be a more effective contraceptive when it is used on its own, without the help or interference of any other drug. Anything from Vitamin C to HIV medications can make it less effective than it is originally intended to be. The effectiveness of the ring also relies on the dosage. Users need to discuss with their doctors to find out which day during their menstrual cycle they should begin to use the ring. Usually Nuva Ring is used on the first day of a women’s menstrual cycle, but that may differ depending on what your doctor recommends. The ring should only be used for three straight weeks and then it should be removed. Once it is removed a one week break from the use of the ring should be taken. More than one ring should not be used at once. Proper care and use of the ring should be given to you by your doctor before you begin to use it.
Nuva Ring was first given the approval by the FDA in late 2001. Since then there have been a wide array of Nuva Ring lawsuits. Some of the lawsuits claim that the health risks associated with the use of Nuva Ring where concealed from users. The lawsuits are also seeking compensation for time that has been lost and for medical bills that have accumulated as a result of the use of Nuva Ring.
The use of Nuva Ring can lead to:
- Strokes
- Blood Clot
- Serious Cardiovascular Problems
If you wear more than one ring at a time or you leave the ring in longer than 3 weeks then this can result in negative symptoms. If any of these symptoms are experienced the first thing you should do is to see a doctor.
Symptoms include:
- Nausea
- Bleeding coming from the vaginal area
- Vomiting
- Headaches
- Dizziness
In addition to many of these symptoms and conditions, Nuva Ring was given a Black Box Warning. This warning was created in an effort to show users the dangers between smoking cigarettes, cardiovascular disease and using oral contraceptives, such as Nuva Ring. The risks that are connected to these three conditions increases upon age and the amount that is smoked. If an individual smokes 15 or more cigarettes a day then they greatly increase their risks associated with these three conditions. These risks have also been found to be higher in women who are over the age of 35.
