[3rd UPDATE] The presence of fungus Exserohilum rostratum in vials of preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate (80mg/ml) has been confirmed by the FDA and CDC.
Further links of steroid injections from these lots from NECC to the multistate outbreak of joint infections and fungal meningitis have been confirmed by the laboratory.
Approximately 14,000 patients may have received injections with medication from three implicated lots of methylprednisolone, according to official estimates. 97% of these patients have been contacted for further follow-up.
A Patient Notification Letter on the FDA “Update on Fungal Meningitis” webpage under the “Related Information” section is available.
