Denture Cream Lawsuit

Approximately 35 million people in the United States wear dentures and the majority of them are elderly. The majority of them also use denture cream to hold their dentures in place. The two most popular products are GlaxoSmithKline’s Poligrip and Superpoligrip, and Proctor & Gamble’s Fixodent. Many of these people and their physicians are just now learning about the recent development of Many of them are just now learning about the development of denture cream lawsuits.
Over the past year or two there have been a number of medical studies that have linked the use of these denture creams to zinc poisoning. The creams use zinc in their formularies – and zinc in miniscule doses is good for the body. Zinc in excessive doses can cause zinc poisoning, for which the initial symptoms are lethargy, excessive dizziness and copper deficiency. It’s the copper deficiency that leads to serious medical ramifications in the form of neuropathy, which can cause permanent numbness in the limbs and other neurological disorders.
In June of 2008 the American Academy of Neurology published an article in its journal Neurology that was co-written by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Department of Pathology, The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the Mayo Clinic. This scholarly review details the results of research on the impact of Poligrip and Fixodent on patients with dentures who used large amounts of the products.
The study was an in depth analysis of the condition and potential sources of medical problems in four patients. One of the patients involved in the study suffered from nerve damage that caused weakness in the hands and poor balance. A second patient suffered from nerve damage that caused her to experience cognitive problems, urinary incontinence, and weakness in the arms and legs so severe that she was rendered wheelchair dependant. Their conclusions: “Denture cream contains zinc, and chronic excessive use may result in hypocupremia [copper deficiency] and serious neurologic disease.”
Since then, there has been a good deal of medical discussion on this linkage, and now denture cream lawsuits have been filed against the two pharmaceutical companies, one of which has already been settled out of court. Denture wearers are consulting with attorneys in many states about the possibility of unwitting exposure to zinc poisoning.
Many elderly people aren’t going to recognize neurological problems as zinc poisoning, and many physicians may not suspect it either. With 35 million denture wearers, this condition may by much more widespread than anyone suspects.

I am really upset that they did not put hazard to your health warnings on the packages years ago. They made the government put them on cigarette packages so they should have made P&G do the same.
We couldn’t agree with you more. P&G added a warning to its web site but didn’t alter its product formula. With the current Denture Cream litigation going we can expect that to change, but at what expense to how many millions of consumers.?.
hi? my name is nancy. i had dentures for 16-18 years .i used all the denture cream trying to get my dentures to fit. i used a lot just to get them to fit right. but i notice i been having lots of tingling in my hands and feet . i have no feelings in my hands i drop things alot. i have headaches alot and hurting down the back of my neck it feels like nerves or spazims goes down to my lower back too.sometime i lose my balance i fell quite a few times. i also have weird tasting in my mouth like poisioning taste and been really sick alot tomy stomach never had promblems like this before i got my dentures. it was after i got my dentures when i stated having all kinds of promblems. i have not been to the doctors in awhile i have no insurance canot afford to go to doctors i have no money i lost my job. i also have feeling like i am dizziness.

My name is Lisa.I also have had dentures for around 14 yrs .I have used one denture adhesive for many yrs now.I’m 38 now an one of the fist things to happen to me was .I had to have sergury on my left arm,It was the neural nerve.This was 4yrs ago.Then my feet started tingling an going numb.I was diganosed with neural neruopathy,Now i can’t even feel my feet @ all.I lose my balance alot,when i drive i cant feel the gas pettel,when i shower sometime i use a hospital chair to shower with.Life is not the same for me anymore..
Hi, my name is Jurwardolyn, i started wearing a partial 9years ago and im a regular user of fixodent. I have been expriencing numbness in my left arm and having numbness in my right foot also tingling.Since i have started having that feeling, now i have had injections in my right foot and have been to a Cardio doctor which i can’t afford because i have no insurance and yet the problem still remains. Im also taking Neurotin 300mg.
I have been using fixodent appr.25years.I also lose my balance.tingling and numbness in hands,feet,drop things a lot..You just can’t trust anything anymore. SHAME on you for not putting this on the labels…..
Funny, I have been using Fixodent since 1988 and the shaking of my right arm ( I am told is inherited) and it is getting worse.

i am 59 years old this sept 2013when i was 21 i was in an accident and cut my mouth and hit between the eyes my jaw had a hairline fracture and broke up lots of my teeth so as soon as possible i went to dentist it was way too much money to fix them without insurance so i had some pulled all of top and replaced with dentures so about a year later i found fixodent and began using it and even suggesting other people to use it now i have had 3 lumbar and 1 cervircal back surgeries i have for along time[ many years]have had numbness in my feet and legs left is worse but the right is catching up like it has fallen asleep and trying to wake up it now goes up my legs on the outside just below the calf this is also painful at timesthe first dr told me you could not be numb and hurt i say you can
