Darvocet Recall

On November 19. 2010, the FDA issued a statement recalling the drug propoxyphene. The drug, marketed as Darvon and Darvocet, has been shown to be directly linked to heart arrythmia as well as other problems. The recommendation was given by an independent FDA advisory panel. On November 17, the government agency considered their findings and decided to issue the Darvon recall.

The active ingredient in Darvon, propoxyphene, is one of the nation’s top 25 prescribed drugs. Darvocet is the active ingredient combined with acetaminophen, as a pain prescription drug. Acetaminophen is the active pain reliever in Tylenol. It is a mild pain reducer and has been a popular prescription for mild and post-surgical pain.  For several years,  experts in various fields have urged the recall to be issued citing dangers as diverse as overdose, (due to addiction) suicide, and various heart problems.

A watchdog group shows evidence that links over 2,000 deaths to either Darvocet or Darvon since 1981. After looking at the total information, the Food and Drug Administration contacted Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals and asked that the drug be removed from the market. The company agreed to the Darvocet recall.

The decision by the FDA has also been prompted by groups of professionals insisting that the drugs mild benefits were strongly outweighed by its hazards. The groups have asked for many years that hazard warnings be issued for the drug. The FDA has been slow to respond to address the risks and possible dangers of the drugs. This recall decision now opens the doors for Darvon and Darvocet lawsuits to move forward.

Links to other side effects of the drug have been mentioned as well.

There are expected to be many Darvon lawsuits to be filed. The drug has been on the market since 1957 and has been widely in use since then.
