Accutane

Accutane is an acne medication that is specifically made to treat people who have extreme cases of acne. Roche Pharmaceuticals are the creators and makers of the Accutane acne medication. Even though the drug was created for acne treatment it should only be taken if you are prescribed it by a doctor.  People with allergies and specific sensitivities are not recommended this drug.

The drug was essentially created in pill form where users can take it twice a day with meals. The single pill is supposed to be divided into two, where part of the pill is taken at one point in the day and the other part is taken at another point in the day. The reason for this is that the consumption of the entire pill at one time can cause a series of problems for the consumer. This brings up the issue of missing dosages. If consumers miss the scheduled time in which they are supposed to take their dose, then it is better if they just skip this dosage all together. Once again this is to prevent too much of the drug from being in your system at once.

The accutane company has had around 5,000 different personal injury accutane lawsuits that have been filed against them. The lawsuits are a result of the negative reactions that individuals have experienced from the use of Acutane. Negative effects can also be experienced by taking the drug simultaneously with another drug.  Anything from vitamin A to Seizure medications can cause a negative reaction when taken in conjunction with accutane.

The use of Accutane can lead to:

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Damage to the Liver
  • Birth Defects which include, but are not limited to, mental retardation and problems with vision and hearing.

Additional lawsuits have been filed due to the serious symptoms individuals have experienced through the use of the Accutane medication. Many of these symptoms have been associated with an overdose of the Acutane medicine.  Following the specified dosage amount can help prevent these symptoms. However, if any of these symptoms are experienced then the individual needs medical attention.

Symptoms include:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Stomach Aches
  • Problems with Balance

The numerous amounts of lawsuits impacted the financial side of Roche pharmaceuticals greatly.  In the end the company was forced to get rid of the drug that was costing them so much money in order to alleviate some of the cost created by the accutane acne medication. Due to the overwhelming amount of Accutane lawsuits Roche pharmaceuticals took the drug off the market in the year 2009 in an effort to prevent any further losses to the company. A generic form of the drug is still used by other different brands of acne medication. The generic name of the drug is Isotretinoin and is being used in the United States to treat other conditions including extreme acne. The lawsuits filed against Roche pharmaceuticals have fought to get compensation to cover medical bills that have resulted from the use of this acne medication.
