Trasylol Side Effects
Trasylol was recalled by the FDA on November 5, 2007. Trasylol has been linked to increased risk of death, kidney or renal failure, heart attacks, strokes and encephalopathy among heart surgery patients. If you or a family member has died or suffered injury due to Trasylol you may have a case.
Trasylol is a medication marketed by the Bayer Corporation that is meant to be used in conjunction with certain types of complex surgery. Trasylol was introduced in 1993 as a drug that can be used during surgery to lessen the likelihood of massive bleeding. The Trasylol side effects that have emerged during the course of the medication’s use have, however, included a number of other serious and difficult post operative problems with both the cardiovascular system and the kidneys.
In 2006 Bayer conducted a study that included 30,000 post-op surgical patients who had received Trasylol and found that there was an increased risk of both heart attacks and strokes. Bayer tried to suppress the study, but the FDA was given a copy of it by one of the researchers.
Since then, additional studies have shown that Trasylol side effects can include kidney failure as well. Over and above the standard minor side effects of powerful medication, the Trasylol side effects have been found to develop from an extremely toxic effect that the drug can have in both the cardiovascular and renal systems.
In October of 2007 the FDA issued a warning that suggests limiting the use of the drug. The Trasylol side effects that the FDA has cited included cardiac infarction (heart attack); cerebrovascular accident (stroke); renal dysfunction (which may require dialysis); and the possibility of anaphylactic shock (severe allergic reaction that can be fatal), especially in patients that have been exposed to Trasylol previously.
This drug has been used for hundreds of thousands of heart bypass operations as well as other surgeries. If you or a family member has had serious health problems following surgery that involved this medication, you may be a victim of a Trasylol side effect and be eligible for compensation.
