Stryker Pain Pump

Stryker Pain Pumps are medical devices produced by the Stryker Corporation of Kalamazoo, MI.  Stryker is a major manufacturer of these devices, which are designed as small implants which provide an automated flow of medication to a patient via a tiny catheter.  They are used for providing a flow of local anesthetic during a breast implant procedure.  Stryker pain pumps are also employed to provide post-operative pain medication to areas of the body that have been operated on.  Two of the most popular uses are for arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery.

The Stryker pain pump has come under heavy scrutiny as a result of the fact that a number of arthroscopic shoulder surgical repairs have resulted in the deterioration of shoulder cartilage – a condition known as postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis, or PAGCL.  This condition can lead to stiffness and chronic pain in the shoulder, as well as a weakened condition and loss of range of motion.  Some patients with severe cases of PAGCL have required an entire shoulder replacement.

At least one study has shown a direct correlation between the development of PAGCL in a patient and the use of a pain pump for postoperative treatment.  The Stryker pain pump has been used for many of these procedures.  Accordingly, the Stryker pain pump is also now the object of examination in a number of product liability lawsuits filed against the company by people who have PAGCL.

Stryker pain pumps are still on the market despite the growing body of concern about their impact on repaired shoulders.  If you feel that you have had health issues as a result of the use of a pain pump in your treatment, one of our legal experts will be glad to go through a thorough analysis of your case with you, free of charge.
