PAGCL
PAGCL is an acronym for postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis. This affliction generally develops in the aftermath of arthroscopic surgical shoulder repair – hence the term “postarthroscopic.” Glenohumeral is a term for the ball-and –socket joint formed by the ‘ball’ at the end of the arm bone and the shoulder socket. Arthroscopic surgery on the glenohumeral joint has become a common non-intrusive method of repairing ligament tears and other damage to the shoulder.
PAGCL is a form of deterioration that takes place in the cartilage of the glenohumeral, or shoulder joint. That cartilage acts as a cushion for shoulder movements. As it deteriorates, the bones that form the shoulder socket and the arm’s rounded end begin rubbing together and creating a number of symptoms associated with PAGCL. Those include pain in the shoulder both when in use and when it is still; stiffness in the joint and weakness in the shoulder – all of which lead to a reduced range of motion.
PAGCL develops over a period of months after shoulder arthroscopic surgery. Generally, PAGCL will occur in a small fraction of shoulder surgery cases. There have been enough cases, however, that studies have been made to isolate the cause. One of the defining characteristics of PAGCL development is the use of a “pain pump” to automatically dispense pain medication to the inflamed post-surgical area. In the most severe cases of PAGCL, the only remedy is replacement of the shoulder.
