Orlistat Lawsuit Information

Orlistat, also known as tetrahydrolipstatin, is a drug designed to help combat obesity. It is marketed as Xenical by Roche, and is sold in an over-the-counter dosage under the name Alli, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. Orlistat prevents the absorption of fat in the gastrointestinal system, thereby reducing caloric intake.

The drug has been on the market long enough to have gone through one patent extension which expired in June of 2009. It is also the first weight loss drug to achieve over-the-counter status in the United States, when Alli was approved by the FDA in February of 2007. It has developed a major safety issue in recent years however, as it has become associated with liver failure in a number of consumers who used the drug.

On August 25th of 2009 the FDA announced that it is conducting a safety review of orlistat and the two drugs that have orlistat as their active ingredient. They have thirty confirmed reports of orlistat users that were hospitalized with jaundice and other liver problems; six of the cases resulted in liver failure.

Consumers have been urged to consult with a healthcare professional if they experience symptoms of liver injury, including weakness or fatigue, fever, jaundice or brown urine. Other symptoms of liver damage could include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, light-colored stools, itching or loss of appetite.

It is unusual that this drug has been on the market for fifteen years and is only now receiving attention for its potential association with liver problems. It's possible that there have been a number of cases that have gone unreported or misdiagnosed. If you or a relative have used orlistat in any of its pharmaceutical forms, including Alli and Xenical and developed liver problems, you should talk with an attorney who is experienced in pharmaceutical liability suits. Fill out the brief form on this page and an experienced attorney in your area will be in touch. You'll receive a briefing on existing orlistat lawsuits and an analysis of your case, all at no charge.
