Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a disease that has been tentatively identified as a side effect from the use of gadolinium based contrast dyes during MRI exams.  As more information about the affliction has emerged, another name came into general use for the disease: Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD).  In literature on the subject, you will often see nephrogenic systemic fibrosis referred to as NSF/NFD.  By any name, the disease is a severe and potentially fatal health problem.

The principal symptoms of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis are hardening of the skin, stiffness in the joints and weakness of the limbs.  The disease can become evident weeks or months after the MRI exam.  Thus far, it has affected patients with kidney problems almost exclusively.  After only weeks following the onset of the disorder, the skin surrounding the joints on limbs can become so thick and hardened and movement so restricted that a wheelchair becomes a necessity.

Formal identification of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis occurred in 2000.  The FDA has monitored its development and in 2007 has taken several actions, raising warning flags about the relationship between NSF and gadolinium MRI exams.  In May the Agency asked the manufacturers to include a warning.  In July, they put out a public health advisory about the relationship between the onset of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and gadolinium MRI studies.
