Kugel Mesh Patch
The Kugel Mesh Patch also know as;
- Composix Mesh Patch
- Davol Patch
is a medical product used to reinforce a surgically repaired hernia. It is a product of Davol Incorporated, who also marketed the product under other brand names and who, beginning in 2005, issued a series of recalls on the product.
Because they are implanted during surgery, Kugel Mesh Patches cannot easily be retrieved or replaced. The mesh surface is mounted on a flexible plastic ring, either round or oval in shape. The theory behind the Kugel Mesh Patch is that the flexible ring allows the patch to be folded and placed behind the herniated area during surgery. Once in place, the flexible plastic frame springs back into shape and acts as a support for the sutured area.
The theory behind the Kugel Mesh Patch is sound; what has proven to be less reliable is the plastic ring used as the patch’s frame. There have been many reported instances of the ring in the Kugel Mesh Patch fracturing at the point where its ends are welded together. The now open ends of the patch ring become dangerous because they are capable of scarring or puncturing nearby organs, including the large intestine.
The Kugel Mesh Patch has had a series of recalls by manufacturer Davol Inc. as different production runs and sizes of the product have shown to have the same structural weak point as the original recalled patches. The first lawsuit was filed against Davol in January of 2006, seeking damages as a result of a Kugel Mesh Patch that failed. Since that time, patients have continued to come forward with stories of abdominal problems following installation of the product.
