Gadolinium
Gadolinium is a metallic element that is used for a number of industrial applications. Its properties have made it useful in the manufacture of compact discs and computer memory disks; it is used in nuclear marine propulsion reactors; it can make other metals extremely malleable with the addition of a small amount of gadolinium to the alloy.
In the medical world, it has proven to be a valuable contrast agent in radiographic studies. When used as the contrast material in an MRI, gadolinium provides a very bright and easily observed image of physical aberrations. Its magnetic properties provide the high level of contrast. Moreover, gadolinium’s inclination to flow to lesions and growths such as tumors or scar tissue because of their high blood content makes it a natural contrast agent for internal physical abnormalities.
Gadolinium was approved by the FDA as a radiographic contrast agent in 1988. It has been used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, for MRA (magnetic resonance angiograms) and for other magnetic resonance studies. Gadolinium contrast agent is marketed by various firms under the names Omniscan, Prohance, Multihance, Magnevist and OptiMark.
Gadolinium use was expanded as magnetic resonance equipment became more and more commonplace in medical centers. In 1997, a disorder given the name nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NFD) or nephrogenic systemic fibrosis was documented and diagnosed, as cases of patient skin hardening that restricted movement became a recurring phenomenon. The disorder was later linked to the scarring of internal organs. In 2006, the link between these disorders and the use of gadolinium as a radiographic contrast agent was clearly established.
If you have undergone MRI studies and have subsequently found your movement restricted by hardening of the skin or joints, call one of our medical/legal experts and we’ll analyze your case at no charge to see if you have a claim for compensation.

NSF is characterized by increased deposits of collagen, most frequently in the skin, but it can be systemic, and in severe cases fatal. There is no known consistently effective therapy.
