NSF/NFD (nephrogenic systemic fibrosis or nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy) are two names for a single disease that has been identified as a potential side effect from use of gadolinium in MRI studies. It is a severe, life altering disease that can be fatal. First identified in 2000, NSF/NFD has become sufficiently evident that in May of 2007 the FDA asked all manufacturers of gadolinium based radiographic dye to put a warning on their products.
The FDA went on to issue a public health advisory regarding the use of gadolinium for patients with kidney disease in July of 2007, along with an official warning to medical professionals. They also noted that the use of gadolinium had been approved for MRIs, but not for any other form of magnetic resonance study, such as MRAs (magnetic resonance angiograms). Because the disease has been in evidence for seven years, several gadolinium lawsuits are pending.
Gadolinium lawsuits may focus on several issues. There is serious question about how long the product manufacturers have known about NSF/NFD and its relation to gadolinium and ignored the issue.
