Fentanyl Lawsuits
Fentanyl is the generic name for an extremely potent synthetic narcotic developed by Janssen Laboratories in the 1950s. Often used for cancer patients, the drug is delivered with a transdermal skin patch that allow for slow absorption through the skin over a 72 hour period. The fentanyl patch is marketed by Janssen under the name Duragesic Patch.
Fentanyl patches – and all other forms of fentanyl-based medication – are eighty times as powerful as morphine. Since its introduction in 1990, there have been many fentanyl lawsuits that focused on overdose symptoms – and fatalities – suffered by patients who used the product. In 2006 a Duragesic lawsuit in New York was recently decided on behalf of the patient, who died as a result of using their fentanyl patch as prescribed. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/08/business/08verdict.html
The FDA has put out warnings about the dangers of this potent narcotic. However overdoses have led to a string of fentanyl lawsuits; the narcotic is often used in conjunction with other analgesics (painkillers) or conversely, is given to patients who have not developed a tolerance for narcotics. There have also been fentanyl lawsuits that suggest patient overdoses or fatalities were the result of a defective patch.
If you or a family member has encountered debilitating side effects from the use of fentanyl, you may be eligible for compensation. Severe side effects may include hypertension; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; hallucinations; muscle rigidity; seizures; slow or irregular heartbeat; slowed breathing; trouble breathing. Many of these may be preliminary to an overdose.
