Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) is the manufacturer of a problem-plagued soft contact lens solution called Complete Moisture Plus. This product has been through two recalls since 2006; the second, in 2007, was generated by the Centers for Disease Control, a federal agency within the National Institutes for Health. The fact that the CDC announced this recall rather than the FDA indicates that there is a substantial public health issue associated with Complete Moisture Plus.
At the time of the May, 2007 there were 138 cases in 35 states reported of a rare and dangerous eye infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). According to the CDC, "Infections can result in permanent visual impairment or blindness. AK primarily affects otherwise healthy people, most of whom wear contact lenses. In the United States, an estimated 85% of cases of this infection occur in contact lens users"
Lawsuits Contact Solution & Vision Damage
Over the last three years multiple class action and individual lawsuits have been filed against AMO for personal injuries suffered by users of Complete Moisture Plus. The disease has caused loss of eyesight for many of the victims. In June of 2008 one woman who had undergone seven cornea transplants as the result of AK damage testified before an FDA committee about the recurring infections she has suffered with some of the transplants. And in California, one consumer has filed a fraud complaint against AMO for false advertising for Easy Rub, its replacement product for the recalled lens cleaner.
This disease is often misdiagnosed because there are other, more common forms of keratitis that are not as virulent as AK. One underscored point in the CDC announcement of the recall is that ophthalmologists ought not overlook AK as a possible diagnosis, since there have been so many cases of the rare disease associated with a widely used contact lens product.
In its earlier recall, AMO pulled Complete Moisture Plus from the market because certain production runs of the product contained bacteria that may have caused the rash of cases of microbial keratitis, another form of the disease that soft lens cleaners are supposedly designed to help the consumer avoid.
