Chantix
In May of 2006 pharmaceuticals manufacturer Pfizer Inc. received approval for its new anti-smoking drug, Chantix. This medication is designed to control cravings for nicotine through a neurological process blocks nicotine getting to the brain. One of the positive features about Chantix, according to the manufacturer’s literature, is that if someone on a Chantix program slips up and smokes, there is no damage and the program should just be continued.
It is a prescription drug that was issued initially with several warnings about potential side effects that appeared during the clinical trials. Many of them have become major issues, and the FDA began issuing cautionary statements about the drug’s use as early as February of 2007.
According to the manufacturer, Chantix is designed to act as a pharmaceutical aid for quitting tobacco over a twelve week period. According to many users, the drug does help control cravings for nicotine. Pfizer advises some sort of behavioral health support to counter the "habit" side of nicotine addiction. The most common side effects shown in the testing period included nausea, headache, insomnia, and abnormal dreams. Approximately 30% of test participants using Chantix reported some sort of nausea.
However the more serious side effects that seemed to coincide with Chantix use included neuropsychiatric problems such as mood swings, depression and suicidal thoughts. In February of 2007, less than a year after Chantix was approved, the FDA issued an Early Comunication about an Ongoing Safety Review that noted a possible connection between the use of Chantix and psychiatric problems. This time, the FDA noted instances of suicidal ideation and/or behavior among Chantix patients, some of whom had not in fact totally abandoned nicotine.
In February of 2008, the FDA issued notification to the medical community stating, "FDA is issuing this Alert to highlight important revisions to the WARNINGS and PRECAUTIONS sections of the full prescribing information for Chantix regarding serious neuropsychiatric symptoms." The warning goes on to state that there is compelling evidence of a relationship between Chantix and potentially fatal psychiatric disorders.
