In May of 2006 the FDA approved the drug Chantix for sale in the United States. Chantix is a prescription drug designed to help smokers quit the habit. It utilizes a unique neuron-chemical effect to block the effects of nicotine and to minimize the craving instinct that accompanies any addiction during withdrawal. To date, approximately three million Americans have tried the drug, which is recommended for a treatment program of twelve weeks.
While Chantix helps minimize the withdrawal effects, drug manufacturer Pfizer recommends that users also participate in some form of support group in order to tackle the 'ingrained habit' aspect of smoking. Pfizer recognizes that physical craving is only part of the smoking problem. In fact, behavioral issues in the form of side effects have created a considerable controversy around Chantix.
The FDA has issued two health advisories, in February of 2007 and again one year later in February of 2008. Both alerts speak to the fact that Chantix is probably related to psychiatric disorders that users of the drug have developed. Those side effects include erratic behavior, mood swings, depression, suicidal thoughts and suicide.
Pfizer continues to promote the drug as a revolution in the treatment for smoking cessation, just as evidence continues to grow about the psychiatric disorders Chantix can cause. A lawsuit against the company is probably inevitable. There is no evidence that smokers constitute a group more susceptible to psychiatric difficulties than the population as a whole.
Chantix users who have had their lives disrupted by depression and despair are certainly going to seek redress in the courts. A Chantix lawsuit may take the form of a consumer suit, or there may be suits filed by people who have lost a loved one to suicide while under treatment with Chantix. One way or another, Chantix users and the Chantix maker are going to end up in court.
Chantix has been on the market less than two years. In that period, it has developed both empirical data and a reputation as a drug with potentially lethal side effects. Pfizer certainly knows that there are Chantix lawsuits on the horizon.
